Electrical Safety

Electricity is an integral part our lives. We use it from the moment we wake up, for example, switching on lights and boiling the kettle, throughout the day and whilst we sleep. Because of this, we forget how powerful and dangerous electricity can be. If used carelessly, electricity can burn, shock and even kill. Electricity must be treated with respect:

• Have your wiring installation checked at least once every five years by a skilled electrician. If you are buying an older property, the wiring should be checked immediately.
• Do not use appliances with worn or damaged wiring, and ensure wiring does not get twisted;
• Keep portable mains-operated appliances out of the bathroom;
• If an appliance appears faulty stop using it and have it checked at once;
• Consider having a Residual Current Device (RCD) for whole house protection. These are especially valuable when power tools are used;
• Look for Standard quality when buying electrical equipment;
• Never drill holes or fix nails in walls without knowing what is hidden behind them.
